Oh, how lucky we've been that English seems so be spoken reasonably well across Europe! We would have been so very stuck otherwise!!
Every time we enter a new country with a different language, we make an effort to learn those phrases one will likely need - hello, please, thank you, excuse me, where are the toilets, I don't speak ___, do you speak English?
Even with this effort, every time someone speaks to me in their language I become a deer in the headlights! Often I cannot for the life of me remember any of the simple phrases we have tried to memorise - I become a stuttering idiot, feeling very uneducated.
Luckily, a smile seems to get you through most of these situations, along with sign language and Google Translate. Oh, and their "little bit" of English, that is so significantly more than our "little bit" of their language!
